‘Tis The Season…To Be Sick

Almost two weeks ago I came down with a nasty flu/cold combo and it was brutal. I hadn’t been that sick in years and almost forgot how to be sick! I hate using store-bought medicine unless I ABSO-lutely have to. So I began my search for things I could do at home to ease my cough, fever, headaches etc… and this is what I came up with:

GINGER-LEMON TEA 

Technically this isn’t an actually “tea” but rather lemon juice and ginger root, but it is something that I always had by my side when I was sick. This tea is great for soothing your sore throat (especially if you throw a little honey in) and according to Live Strong the ginger is sweat inducing, which then releases a natural antibiotic that helps strengthen your immune system. Also, it’s pretty tasty 😉

COLD COMPRESS

This may sound easy and maybe a little silly, but putting a cold cloth or compress on your forehead or nape of your neck can help reduce your fever quicker. My fever only lasted one day!

BLOW YOUR NOSE

This may seem pretty obvious, but a lot of people tend to suck back that mucus instead of blowing it into a tissue. Make sure you’re blowing your nose gently and not shooting your germs everywhere (according to WebMD).

STAY WARM…AND REST!

Your body needs time to rest and heal. I understand a lot of people are go, go, go! types but sometimes it’s okay to take a couple of days and give your body the rest it needs. This is especially important for the first couple days you are ill. Your body is trying to fight your sickness off and by keeping yourself warm and rested your immune system can focus on tackling what it needs to.

GARGLE

With salt water of course. This is something that my parents made me do when I was younger and had a sore throat. Trust me, yes it’s disgusting (please don’t drink it!) but it really helps. Mix about 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water and gargle. Repeat up to 4 times daily.

TAKE A BATH

Or a hot shower. Not only will the hot water help you sweat it out, the steam will help with your congestion so you can breathe easier (even if it’s only temporary).

  1. I am the same way when it comes to meds; I often have to take enough for headaches and to sleep, so when it comes to cold and flu…not unless nothing else has worked! Ginger tea is a great one, so is taking a hot bath (if you add something with cinnamon to the bath it is also good to induce sweats).

    I also like peppermint steambaths (more the kind you do with hot water, a bit of peppermint and a towel that covers your head to let you breath in the steam). Peppermint in a bath can also be helpful but be very very careful not to add much to the water as it can actually scald you (or make hot water seem cold!).

    My grandmother also use to give me “kimulsup” (prolly spelled that wrong) which is a bowl with hot milk-soaked bread and caraway seeds. It doesnt taste good but always seemed to settle an upset stomach.

  2. My go to remedy is crushed fresh garlic with honey and milk(ok I substitute the milk with coffee mostly)But it works better with the milk.1 crushed clove with a teaspoon of honey and 1/2 ounce of milk stir and down it,wouldn’t do more than 2 times a day,morning and night worked for me
